"Is this product safe for my child?"
One of the most common questions we’re asked is whether something is suitable for a particular age. It’s a sensible question. When you’re buying for a baby or child.
1. Age labels are a guide, not a rule
When you see “3+” or “suitable from birth” on a product, that label is based on safety standards and typical development stages. It helps you avoid items with small parts, complex features, or materials that are not appropriate for certain ages.
At Kidstuff, the products we stock meet New Zealand safety standards and come from trusted suppliers.
. The age recommendation is there first and foremost for safety.
However, it is still a guide, not a strict rule. Every child develops at their own pace. One child may be confident and ready for something slightly more advanced. Another may need more time, even if they are technically within the age range. Safety comes first. After that, you consider the individual child.
2. Think about the child, not just the number
It’s completely normal to feel unsure.
Choosing the right item becomes easier when you think about the child’s interests and abilities rather than focusing only on the age printed on the box. Ask yourself:
-
What do they enjoy?
-
Have they used something similar before?
-
Are you looking for something they can use independently, or a bit of a challenge?
For clothing and shoes, fit matters more than age. Children grow at different rates, so sizing should always be checked properly rather than relying on a number alone. The same principle applies to toys, books, puzzles and craft kits — the individual child matters more than the label.
3. When in doubt, ask
If you’re unsure, that’s normal — especially when buying gifts.
A few practical questions can make the choice clearer: How old is the child? What are they interested in? Have they used something like this before? Even small details can help avoid disappointment.
If you’re buying for a child you don’t know well, it’s often safer to choose something slightly older rather than too young. Children tend to grow into things quickly, but they can outgrow “too young” items just as fast.
Taking a moment to check helps you feel more confident — and makes it more likely the child will enjoy and use what you’ve chosen.
