STRANGE PELICAN FACTS!
• Contrary to popular belief, the large skin pouch that dangles from a pelican's bill is not used to store food. It's used as a means of capturing food—not as a place to keep it tucked away for extended periods.
• Some pelican species can hold up to three gallons’ worth of liquid in their gular sacs - that's a whopping TWELVE LITRES of water!
• We don't mean this as an insult - but pelicans are the original Mouth Breathers. Although pelicans technically have nasal openings, their nostrils are sealed off and clogged with desalinizing glands to remove salt from seawater. As such, pelicans predominantly breathe through their mouths. One of the Stranger Things we've come across in a bird, really.
